Ballaghaderreen Mens Shed generously raised €120 for the Irish Heart Foundation at last nights meeting. The Irish Heart Foundation Nurse Melissa Collins provided information about heart health, blood pressure and pulse and complemented the gentlemen on their wellbeing programme and physical activity sessions.
Special thanks to Pat Towey who helped us spread the word about the event in Ballagh yesterday. It was a great success. We are seeing incredible results so far amongst our Men’s Mover participants ! Keep up the good work lads!

🎼🎸💃🕺 Dementia Friendly Social Tea Dancing 🎼🎸💃🕺 will commence in Hannon’s Hotel on Wednesday next 13th November at 2 to 4pm. Following the success of similar initiatives in Galway and Mayo where organisers have noted the power of music and its ability to bring people back to themselves through the stimulation of memories and nostalgia through music and dance. This has assisted in people having fun and getting exercise while engaging with family and their carer’s.

This evening, I and other public representatives are meeting with staff at Cuisle to find a solution to keep Cuisle Open.
The Plan to Close Cuisle Must Be Halted.
Earlier this afternoon I was on Shannoside responding to Tony Cunningham, IWA.
It is important to note that during his interview he did confirm that if funding is found to rectify the electrics etc. that Cuisle IWA Holiday Resort and Respite Centre will stay Open until the lease expires. He also said this to me in a telephone conversation on Saturday. You will see below my email to the CEO and Board of IWA seeking clarification on this issue. I have seen the generic press release response that is being circulated this afternoon to people. We need a real clear response from the IWA. If the funding is found will Cuisle remain Open...
Cuisle has a Long Term future in Roscommon - we all have to unit to ensure that it remains open in the interest of the 48 staff (between permanent and relief), the Irish Wheelchair Association members and other groups and individuals that use the respite and holiday resort including Irish Heart Foundation - Stroke Support Groups, Special Olympics, Atakia Ireland. In the interest of the local economy too a solution has to be found to keep this key unique accessible Failte Ireland Welcome Standard tourism resort open in Donamon, Co. Roscommon.
Email to IWA CEO & Board:
Dear CEO Rosemary, President Eileen and Chairperson Martin and IWA Board members,
I am writing as a public representative and friend of Cuisle IWA Holiday Resort and respite centre.
I would like to advise you that I met with the Divine Word Missionaires on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. who continue to be fully supportive of IWA National Holiday Resort Cuisle continuing its incredible Holiday Resort and Respite centre in Donamon.
I spoke to Tony Cunningham IWA on Saturday when he contacted me at 2.30 p.m. and I would like to clarify one key point: If funding is found from Government to upgrade wiring and other works identified in fire safety assessment referred to will Cuisle remain open? Tony Cunningham indicated that Cuisle would remain open if these works were carried out until the lease expired.
This is the fundamental question.
Is the issue funding?
What is the rational behind the decision to close Cuisle on the 29th November?
I am asking the Board to reverse their decision.
When I spoke to Tony Cunningham I made it clear that Cuisle IWA Accessible Holiday resort has a long term future in Roscommon.
I will work to find a solution to keep Cuisle Open which is at the heart of our community. I know that the incredible staff are devastated not just for themselves but for the IWA members and other groups and individuals they provide vital respite and holidays for demonstrating the clear vocational aspect of their work.
I believe in the work that you have been doing. Successive governments have invested in developing this fully accessible holiday resort at Cuisle through capital infrastructure upgrades to the building and through investment in accessible tourism facilities in the locality.
It boasts of 31 accessible fishing bays in Ballinapark and recently developed 35 metres of accessible angling platform at Stoneham’s Lake and a recently developed walk for wheelchairs along the shore of Stoneham’s lake.
All of the facilities onsite are 100% wheelchair accessible with fully accessible amenities in the surrounding area too.
There was real vision behind the development of Cuisle.
As a public representative I have been influenced by this and when I recently applied for funding from Inland Fisheries Ireland NSAD funding and Outdoor Recreation fund it was for two fully Accessible projects to enhance further the tourism offering at Cuisle.
We now need the IWA Nationally to show this same commitment to the IWA members that use Cuisle and the dedicated staff that have devoted their lives to ensuring that these members have fun relaxed memorable holidays that are fully supported and 100% accessible at CuisleThis is important for the IWA members and their families.
I put up a post on Social Media (Facebook) when I heard about the threat to Cuisle on Friday. It has had a reach of over 31,000 which shows an incredible level of support for Cuisle. The stories of support shared on the page are a massive endorsement of the work of IWA and the fantastic staff at Cuisle.
Finally, two years ago at the 20th anniversary of Cuisle, I know Rosemary that you as CEO of Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA), were convinced about the unique and vital offering at Cuisle. To quote from your
“Often when a person with a disability, their friends or family, looks to organise a holiday, concerns over access, supports and other requirements, big and small, can make it seem impossible. Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) understands this, which is why facilitating and supporting cherished time away is such an important part of our culture. For IWA, supporting or arranging a holiday is much more than a service. We are delighted to celebrate with our regular visitors and guests today, all who have made many special memories at Cuisle”
Be assured that I will work with you to secure the funding from government to carry out re-wiring and any other works required to sustain this vital accessible holiday experience and respite centre in Ireland’s hidden heartlands so you can continue to facilitate and support cherished time away in fully accessible surroundings which I know is such an important part of your culture.
I look forward to hearing from you.
