Code of Ethics

Roscommon Sports Partnership are now in the position to offer clubs a basic 4 hour training workshop in the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport. Every volunteer who works with children (up to 18 years of age) is required to do this course. It is as much for the protection of the volunteer as for the child. The workshops are open to all sports leaders and have a duration of 4 hours, which is covered in one evening. The workshops must have at least 15 participants 18 years or over.

It can be arranged that the COE tutor travels to a club to give the course or a central venue can be organised.

This is the only Irish Sports Council recognised Code of Ethics Course. All participants receive a certificate on the night. Participants name and number are then registered with the Sports Council on their data bank for each individual sport.

Buntús
Buntús

What is Buntús?

Buntús Play, Buntús Sport and Buntús Soccer are three new exciting programmes developed to support Primary School Teachers
in Introducing Young People to Sport and helping to develop their interests.

Buntús Play for the Junior Cycle and Buntús Multi Sport for the Senior Cycle will initially be delivered by Teachers in Schools in support of the Physical Education Curriculum.

The Buntús Programme seeks to:

  • Raise the profile of physical education and sport.

  • Improve In-service Training opportunities for Teachers.

  • Assist Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB’s) to develop and deliver appropriate support for Teachers.

  • Provide enjoyable and meaningful activity for children.

  • Support delivery of the National Curriculum.

The three key components of the Programme are:

  • Training

  • Resource Cards

  • Equipment

These three elements link to provide an easy to understand and accessible support structure for children to gain a fun, but high quality introduction to sport.

At present, there are two strands of Buntús in operation in Roscommon: - Buntús Generic and Buntús FAI. It is hoped that in the near future there will also be a Buntús IRFU, Buntús GAA and Buntús START available to all primmary and pre-school children in Roscommon.

The Buntús Programme is nationally Co-ordinated by the Irish Sports Council and locally delivered through the Roscommon Sports Partnership. AT present, there are 39 Primary Schools participating in the buntus programme. Click on the link below for list of participating schools.

Dance as a Physical Activity

Athlone Contemporary Dance Project

As part of their mutual agendas outlined in their respective strategies, the arts offices and sports offices of Westmeath and Roscommon devised a programme for the development of contemporary dance in the Athlone region. The project is being co-ordinated and delivered by Niamh Condron and takes place over a forty-week period, starting in September 2005 leading toward a public performance and dance festival in May 2006.

The 40-week training and development period will explore various aspects of contemporary dance within four groups.

• Transition Year students from Athlone Community College and Summerhill College will work towards the development of a dance piece. Research and development will introduce the students to creative dance and choreography otherwise not available to them in their school programme.

• A number of Community Groups from the Athlone region will undertake similar dance related tuition work on a community basis with the dance artist/choreographer in order to increase participation in dance among the community.

Aims and Objectives of the Project

Aims
 To promote dance as a vibrant and enjoyable art form
 To encourage young people to become physically active.
 To positively promote dance within the education sector and to encourage participation in contemporary dance among young people.
 To allow the artist access to suitable working space in order to train, rehearse and produce work.
 To increase public knowledge and appreciation of dance
 To develop programming, audience development and marketing strategies for dance which can be used as a model of good practice.

Objectives
 To encourage the development of a dance residency that is capable of providing the basis of an excellent programme for the development of a dance festival.
 Explore the idea of dance education in partnership with the artist, education institutions, local authorities and sports partnerships.
 To create opportunities for career development for the dance artist/choreographer.
 To encourage more and better dance programming.
 To use dance as a medium for increasing levels of physical activity
