A full schedule of events is listed with an official finishing time of 6.15pm.
The main difference for 2008 is the change in schedule for the inside track.
For 2008, the inside track will now accomadate the following order of events:
(A) Hurls
(B) Sprints- All heats based on qualification and all semi finals and finals based on time.
All sprinters pre assigned.
(C) High Jump.- Scheduled to start at 3.0 pm

Our BIG PEOPLE.
It is very rarely that we mention our big people in thes notes but we have 3 athletes from the county of Roscommon who compete at university level and who are making themselves well known at a national level.

The last competition was the Irish University Indoor Championship and their achievements should be acknowledged:

The athletes are:

Chris McDermott- Roscommon AC who came 1st in his sei final of the 60m hurls with a time of 8.61 seconds and who finsihed 2nd in te final with an even better time of 8.58. This final produced a championship best ever time of 8.28 which is now a new record for this event.

The 2nd athlete is ciaran O'Cathlain who is competing in his 1st year of University as part of the DCU team.
He came 3rd in his semi fianl with a time of 8.86 seconds and a fantastic time of 8.82 seconds to finish 4th in the championship best time final.
It is interesting to note that both of these hurls runners started their careers with the hurls coach of Roscommon AC-Mary Burgoyne.

The 3rd Athlete is our own Sharon Corbett from Taughmacommell. Sharon in the shot putt threw 9.62m coming in a credible 5th place.
As sharon did say " Training isnt everything". Her first coach duly replied " But it helps a lot ....."

Thanks to the 3 athletes for competing at such a high level and giving the younger athletes in the club and county the additional boost they need to continue their sport.

Cross Country Update.
The Club travels to Ballinamore Co. Leitrim on Sunday for the regional even ages cross country championship. The under 12 and under 14 teams should enjoy what is expected to be a hilly course.

After that we travel to Hazelwood in Sligo on the 10th Nov for the uneven age groups with a high expectation for the under 13 teams to perform exceptional well and qualify for the all ireland championships.

End of Season delights !!
All 103 members of the Club were invited to attend the end of season party
Held in the hall on the 27th June 2007.
Not only did all the Sprinty Spiders and Tigers show up but also some of the Intermediate and Senior members made an appearance.
It was good for the younger members of the club to see the older members at the same function.
Apart for the sweets, food and music , not to mention the different versions of
“ dancing” , the club showed a sample BRIGHT RED athletic top which will be introduced into the club in September.
The party continued until it was time to announce the members of the year for 2007.

ATHLETIC TOPS.
The club reminds its members that the new red athletic tops when purchased are to be worn at all athletic competitions including cross country which starts in September as well as all training sessions.

Order forms for the tops are to be returned to the Club before the 19th August as it is hoped to place an order for the tops on Tuesday the 21st August.

2007 annual general meeting
6th Sept. 2007

The Annual General Meeting of St. Ronan’s Athletic Club took place on the 5th Sept. 2007 following due notification having been issued to all registered members.

Hereunder is the detailed account of the decisions reached by the parents of the members of the 3 clubs at the meeting.

The meeting was opened by the coach and Secretary of the Club , Pat Fitzgibbon, who welcomed all present and started by outlining what happened in the club during the past year.
The main item of importance was the establishment and successful continuation of the
“ Little Athletics” . The club has a total of 53 registered members and the praise is due to both Maura Kelly and Leanne Kenny for their dedication and commitment to the 6-9 year olds. The further establishment of a satellite club in Drum by Joe Harney under the auspice of St. Ronans is how the club hopes to develop over the coming years.
Now we have the situation whereby on a Monday night, little athletics is held in Drum, Wednesday in Taughmaconnell and on Friday night with the intermediate and Senior Clubs. Sunday sees the full club coming together as one unit.
The “ Little Athletics” following a naming competition have decided to call themselves the “ Sprinty Spiders and Tiger Club “ .
The intermediate club ,10-14 years of age , is coached by both Pat and Joe , on a Friday and the Senior Club , 14-19, is held from 8.30 to 10pm on Friday.

The secretary , made known to the parents at the AGM that the club has a very strict child protection policy in place including a travel policy and a parental code of conduct which all members of the intermediate and senior clubs sign upon joining.
The club also has a system in place should adult helpers wish to assist in the club.

The Financial Director, deemed Treasurer, Deirdre O’Mhurchadha, presented the financial report of the club highlighting two major items.
The current account now has a total of € 30.49 in the account plus our recently obtained sponsor cheque. The cost of transportation is a major drain on the club with a club subsidy of over € 935.0 This was because members stated that they were travelling to a competition and then withdraws from the transport listing.
This was one item that needed to be addressed by the parents.

The club had recently decided to invest in athletic tops for members. The tops would assist the members at training and at competition. It is an easily identifiable for members of the club.
The club recently secured sponsorship from Michael Mannion Quaries for € 1500.0 following a request to several companies.

The parents at the AGM following discussion have made the following decisions.
It is the parents of the club members that make all decision is relation to the operation of the club which is decided upon at the AGM and implemented by the club coaches and Officials during the year.

Newsletter
To: All the Members and Parents of the Sprinty Spiders & Tiger Club as well as
The Intermediate and Senior sections of St. Ronan’s Athletic Club.
Now that the crazy month of May is over, it is time to plan for the summer months and outline our plans. Some of the the Sprinty Spiders & Tigers competed in their first competitions in Lanesborough and in Sligo as well as the county Community Games in Boyle. This Junior Club is a great success in many ways but not in all aspects. The parental roster has worked well. The 2 parents that attend each week are a help.
However, we have still failed to find three other parents to agree to do a one day course in order to assist the club. The coaches at present have not had a Wednesday night off since December 2006. The hall preparation for the club each week involves the removal of all the chairs /tables as well as the cleaning of the hall. This is not part of the duties of a coach-especially since we are paying rent per hour for the hall.

The Intermediate and Senior Clubs have competed in Lanesborough and Sligo as well as the Schools Track & Field competition. Hopefully we will also have some athletes qualified for the National All Irelands in Tullamore. One All Ireland Indoor champion to date. The Intermediate Club and Senior Clubs will continue to operate during the summer months each Friday from 7-8.30pm as well as Sunday.

The Junior Club will finish on Wednesday the 27th June 2007 in the hall with a party.
The Junior Club will re open in September. Your membership is valid till December.

On the 27thJune, all members of all sections of all Clubs are invited to attend and two special announcements will be made on the night.
(A) The new Club Hoodies will be introduced for all the sections.
These hoodies will form part of the new club outfit for next year.
(B) One member of each club will be declared “Member of the Year” and will receive a perpetual trophy for the year. This “Member of the year” will automatically receive free membership for the 2008 year as well as first choice on all club activities during 2008.
As always should you wish to contact the club, please do so after any training session or direct to the Children’s Officer, Antoinette Kenny.

PREPARATIONS FOR THE AUTUMN SEASON
6.6.07

The club would like to see more parents become involved in doing the one day coaching course for LITTLE ATHLETICS. This would solve the current situation where the coaches have not had a free Wednesday night off since December 2006.

Since the parents are in the hall anyway as part of the parental roster, they might as well do something constructive.

The adult education programme is confirmed with a nursing course for people caring for elder persons. This 8 hours course, by the Order of Malta will equip the particants in the daily routine of an elderly person.

Other course currently being formulated are Intermediate First Aid, Sports Injuries course, Basic First Aid, SAQ certification, Sports Conditioning. Child Protection Courses. Children's First Course.

The club welcomes proposals in relation to the education courses that are all held in the Communtiy Centre in Taughmaconnell.

Coaching Course.
New Course for " Little Athletics"

Anyone interested in completing the one day course in " Little Athletics " should notifty the club as a course is being organised for the end of April in Roscommon Town.
The Club will cover the cost of the course.
With additional 3 coaches the club will then have a total of 6 coaches for " Little Athletics " and give the opportunity to everyone to have a night off and when fully operational , a session every three weeks.

There is also a new session in DRUM COMMUNITY CENTRE every Monday night from 6-7 pm.

County and Regional News
2nd May 2007

Following a meetig of all the clubs in the western region
( Connaught) , it was decided that the 2008 indoor championships will again be held over one day. This was in spite of the fact that clubs were complaining that the 2007 competition was long and rushed.
It was announced that the 2008 competition will start at 10.30 and is expected to finish at approx 7.30 pm but timetabling will be introduced.

The National Indoor championship held on te 14th April in Nenagh saw the under 12 Shot won by a Conal O'Brien from Kiltoom with a throw of 9.74m. Conal , a member of Roscommon AC has started to train with St. Ronan's AC in recent weeks prior to the national championship. He is continuing his training with St. Ronan's on a Sunday for the outdoor season.

The Club was disappointed that the Priamry Schools 4 x 100m relay competition scheduled for the 2nd May was again cancelled due to lack of numbers. It is a matter for concern.

The "Sprinty Spider and Tiny Tiger " are still going from strength to strength ,mainly thanks to the efforts of Maura Kelly and Leanne Kenny. It has been decided that this little athletics club will close for the summer.

35 Members of the club travelled to Sligo on the 21st Arpil to compete in the 4 county competition. It was the 1st time for many of the under 8,9,and 10 year olds in the club and the senior members assisted the club officials on the day
( after some encouragement)

Finally , the club has received some new equipment in the form of new senior starting blocks and new 5Kg shots.
It is hoped that the members will find the equipment benefitical.

New Competition:

Primary School Relay

Wednesday the 28th March 2007 in the Lanesborough Track.

This competition is for under 8,9,10,11,13,15,17, and will have a sprint, Middle distance , shot or ball throw subject to the age group and finally the Long Jump. The day finishes off with a relay .

The 2007 Regional Track and Field will be held in Sligo this year due to the re development of the Galway track. The competition will be over 2 days , the 10th and 17th June .
Several counties in the region host their county community Games over the June bank holiday weekend.

More details of these forthcoming competitions shortly.

2007 Indoor Season.

The 2007 Indoor season kicks off on the 10th Feb 2007 in Nenagh. All members aged 11 will compete in this competition. Next Update Due: 31.1.07

JUNIOR SECTION
2007:

Following the success of the ATHLETIC LEADER course in the club, an introduction night was held before xmas 2006 to establish if a demand exists in the 6-9 age group for an athletic club.
The 3 newly qualifed coaches catered for the 17 children who attended and on the 10th Jan 2007 opened its doors to the new section of the Club.

The influx of the 57 children who attended the 1st night took all by surprise and it was a fantastic sight to see all these 6-9 year olds running and laughing in the hall.
Hopefully as time goes on, and with additional coaches and equipment, the plan will succeed.

Any child from 6-9 years of age may join the club which takes place every Wednesday from 7-8 pm in the Community Centre in Taughmaconnell.
If the numbers continue to increase the Club has plans to extend the hours for the Junior Club.
As usual , should you wish to contact the club, please do so after any training session.

2007 MEMBERSHIP
As a direct result of the introduction of the "ATHLETIC LEADER " course and the now new facility of having 6-9 year olds in the club from Jan 2007, certain operational changes need to be made within the club.

It is envisaged that, subject to demand, all 6-9 year olds , will register before Xmas 2006 on Friday the 8th Dec. 2006 and that a specific hour per week will be agreed with the newly qualified " ATHLETIC LEADER " supervisors. It is hoped that the club can operate the 3 sections of the club on the same day - Sunday from 12-1 pm.

As previously stated the requirements for registration, has been eased. No Birth Certificates are required and a simple dom only needs to be completed.

When the course is completed, more details will be available.

As usual, should you wish ot contact the club please do so after any training session or direct to the Child Proctection Officer, Antoinette Kenny.

CHANGES IN THE CLUB
MAJOR CHANGES IN THE OPERATION OF THE CLUB.

Dear Parent / Member.

St. Ronan’s Athletic Club in conjunction with Athletics Ireland, The Irish Sports Council and Roscommon Sports Partnership are embarking on an exciting new development.

From January 2007, the club will now cater for all children aged 6-9 years of age, one hour per week.
The club will now begin to change and operate as three (3) sections.

6-9 years of age – One day a week for one hour.
10- 14 year olds - No change. Every Friday and Sunday as normal.
Over 14 year olds- No change in training but there will be a change in regional
Competition and other athletes will be training with our athletes.

To make this happen, Athletics Ireland are running a course , called “ Athletic Leader” in Taughmaconnell Hall on Saturday the 2nd Dec. 2006 at 10.0 am. It is designed specifically for people with no experience whatsoever in athletics and it is to show people how to organise and play games with children aged 6-9 years of age.
I’m advised that it is a very interesting , fun course to attend and I recommend all who have young children to do this course.

Athletics Ireland are also doing their part by getting rid of the insurance premium for under 8 year olds which was the reason why the club could not cater for 6-8 year olds prior to this. Birth Certificates are now no longer required.

The course is a one day all inclusive course and the next course is scheduled for Saturday the 2nd Dec 2006 at 10.0 in Taughmaconnell Community Centre.

Any person interested in completing the course should contact the undersigned as a matter of urgency as the course will fill up quickly as it is an extremely popular and interesting course.
To book your place, please contact @
athleticcompetitions@eircom.net or
paul@athleticsireland.ie
or by phone for more information to 087 2483352

1st Competition of the 2006/07 year.

The 1st Club competiiton of the new athletic season takes place on Sat . the 14th Oct 2006 in the convent grouns Roscommon Town at 12.0 noon.

This cross country event is again following the open policy adopted by Athletics Ireland Roscommon in permitting all who attend the competition to compete.
The ages are from under 11 to 19 and the club will as always travel by bus leaving at 10.30am from the car park in Taughmaconnell. It is expected that we will be leaving Roscommon @ 2.30 and arriving back in Taughmaconnell not later than 3.30pm ( ish) . Again, in accordance with the travel policy of the Club , all members will contact their parents within 20 minutes of arrival in Taughmaconnell.

The Club advises all new parents who have members travelling for the 1st Time to contact the Club should they have any queries on the travel arrangements or the competition.

Subject to the results in Roscommon, the club will compete in the Connaught Championships in Athlone on the 21st Oct. and in Galway on the 5th Nov.
Parents will be required to assist the club in Athlone and a bus will travel to Galway.
Parents are again reminded that they are entitled to travel with the club to any of the competitions free of charge.

2007 Membership.

Following the AGM of the club on the 15th Sept. last, all registered parents of members of the Club have now received details of all the decisions reached at the AGM including the new enhanced code of ethics and good Practice.

As a result of the decisions reached , the Month of October is again set aside to process membership applications for the 2007 year and this year there is an application form as well as the full code of ethics and good practice. Parents of proposed members must sign not only the application form but read accept and sign the 3 parts of the code in order for applications to be processed.
While the Club acknowledges that this proceedure may seem unnceccessary and not warranted in St. Ronans, the club will do everything in its power to safeguard both its members and the club itself.

As all sporting organisations are now required to have in place a code of ethics which includes new parental and not club responsibilities, it is worth while for parents to know exactly how they are expected to assist the club and how to behave at club competitions .

Hopefully , all membership issues can be finalised before the end of the month of October.

As usual , if any parent wishes to contact the club they may do so after any training session or direct to the Child Protection Officer, Antoinette Kenny.

Report on 2006 Social Day.
The day started well with the bus arriving earlier than the members.
All 30 members and the 5 adults eventually set off at 8.15 via Athlnoe, Tullamore
Glendalough arriving in Clara Laragh at 11.15am on time ( as expected)

Bands received ,check in times noted, rules mentioned and then the madness started.

You can always know who gets wet first and who will be late for the 1st Check in at 12.0 noon. The 1st cups of coffee for the adults along wit the chocklate buscuits and cake were well received.

Lunch was scheduled for 1pm but by 12.45 all were starving and decided themselves to start eating which was a 1st as it is usually a case of chasing after them to eat !!

The park states that it is not suitable to anyone over 12. However our little group of big people didnt seem to mind but were spotted everytime they attempted to do anything with boats !!! Wonder why ???

The trip finished at 4pm and the nice comfortable bus was great to sit down and watch the DVD fo Fr. Ted on the way home.
Arrival in Moate and the power cut almost spoiled the trip as Supermacs were going to be deprived of 35 hungry people but in fairness , they coped well to fed us all within 15 minutes.
Telephone calls made to parents and back in downtown
Taughmaconnell at 8.15pm all safe well , fed and alive but tired and dirty .

A good day and thanks to the 4 parents who made the trip.
Grace , Bridie, Bernie and Patricia.

Clara Laragh is now off the agenda and schedule for at least another 2 years.

2006 National Championships.
The Club would like to congradulate all the members who competed in the All Ireland Track & Field Championships in both Tullamore and Cork.

The Tullamore Event for the under 14-19 was exciting as Leanne Kenny availed of the 1st Aid service at both the track and in Tullamore Hospital. Thankfully the injury was not serious.
Our thanks to both the Order of Malta and Tullamore Hospital.
Our shared discus thrower, had a Personal Best of 25.08m in the under 16 Discus and finished 8th overall. The Winner was from GCH.

In Cork , 2 fantastic results from the under 11 boys long Jump and the under 12 Girls Shot.
Tom Butler, in the long Jump jumped another personal best of 3.81m also finishing 8th overall. This was despite the unusual and strange decision that the under 11 jumped off the sand and not the Board.
In the under 12 Shot, Eva Keogh , did it again by beating the 6.0m mark in the shot putt with a throw of 6.34m another personal best for her.

Obtaining a personal best in a National Competition is by far the best an athlete can do in the highest competition in the land for that age group.
Hopefully it will now continue to lead to further training and development for the future.

REGIONAL UNDER9-12 COMPETITION:
11.6.2006.

The club travelled to Sligo IT on the 10th June to compete in the under 9 to under 12 regional competition.

Despite the 1st rains for 2 weeks, the competition went well and one of the highlights was the photo finish timeing and actual photos for each and every race.

Congrats to the 3 qualifiers who now travel to Cork on the 16th July 2006. The Full results can not be posted on this site as they are too big but are now all available on the webpage .
The qualifiers are:
Tom Butler under 11 Long Jump
Eva Keogh under 12 Shott putt.
Lorraine Kenny under 9 - Games competition.

The under 13-19's are in Galway on te 17th June for their regional championship.

The Club wishes to thank both the 2 parents and the 2 coaches who travelled with the club and looked after the athletes. Hear that they really enjoyed the bus home!!!!

Regional Competitions
31st May 2006:

Following the success of the club at the county championships , the club now travels to Sligo on the 10th June for the under 9 to under 12 regional competition and then again to Galway on the 17th June for the under 13 to under 19 for their regional competitions. Training has been tight due to community games and other sporting committments of the members but a good days competition will be had by all.
The bus to Sligo leaves at 8.30am with 2 helpers and 3 adults on the bus. The travel arrangements to Galway have yet to be finalised.

Hopefully, the club members will qualify for the National All Irelands in both Cork and Tullamore.
Full details of all the results should be avaialble on the webpage by 12.0 noon on the 13th June 2006. Clubs will have the results by 6pm on the day of competition .

Good luck to everyone who is travelling and enjoy your day.

New Funding for Roscommon Athletes
8th April 2006 :

At the meeting of the Roscommon Board of Athletics Ireland this week, the Board agreed with the proposal to introduce a development fund for Roscommon Athletes
Who have reached national development standards.

This scheme is seen as the next stage in the development of athletics in the county and the County Secretary , Pat Fitzgibbon, stated that :
“ At last, Roscommon now have to deal with the situation that we in Roscommon have got athletes of national standing “.

Due to the effort and commitment of athletic coaches of the past years such as Mary Burgoyne, Fabian Walsh and others, the standard of athletics in Roscommon have steadily developed whereby athletes from Roscommon are beginning to set national standards and qualify for European competitions. Athletes such as Chris McDermott,
( Roscommon AC) 110m hurls and Sharon Corbett, ( St. Ronans AC ) Shot Putt, were among the first to break through these barriers and have competed in international competition and represented Ireland in the past.

The scheme enables registered AAI athletes from Roscommon County, who have reached national development standards, subject to certain criteria, to apply to the County Board for part funding of their specific training and development expenses.
All clubs will receive notice of the scheme.

The 2006 track and Field competition starts on the 23rd April in Sligo and the county Championships will be held on the 21st May 2006 in Lanesborough starting at 12.0 Noon. This year as previously announced, Roscommon AAI, will host an open championship, and have extended an invitation to all athletes in the county to this competition especially the athletes who are taking part in the Community Games competition. This will give these athletes a chance to run in a competition before the county Community Games take place over the June Bank holiday weekend.

Full details of all athletic competitions and news is available on the website@
